Accessibility: Psychology Meets Inclusive Design

Designing for accessibility is often treated as a technical checklist, adding alt text, ensuring color contrast, or making components keyboard-navigable. While these technical standards are essential, true inclusive design goes deeper. It requires understanding the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural psychology of how diverse users interact with the world.
When we approach accessibility through the lens of psychology, we move from simply "fixing barriers" to building environments that accommodate human variation. Here is how psychological principles drive impactful, inclusive design.
Minimising Cognitive Load for All: Cognitive accessibility is about designing for varying levels of attention, memory, and processing processing power. Users with ADHD, dyslexia, or temporary stress process information differently. By utilising clear typographical hierarchies, predictable navigation patterns, and minimalist layouts, we lower the mental effort required to use a product, benefiting everyone from neurodivergent individuals to a distracted user on a noisy train.
The Psychology of Control and Predictability: Human beings experience anxiety when they lose control over their environment. For users relying on screen readers or assistive technologies, unexpected layout shifts, auto-playing media, or hidden focus states cause immediate frustration and cognitive friction. Inclusive design priorities predictability, giving users agency over how they consume content and navigate interfaces.
Emotional Design and Belonging: Accessibility directly impacts a user's self-efficacy—their belief in their ability to succeed at a task.
